Dear family of Sahar,
I’m 13 years old and from a school in Long Island called Hanc. When I read her story, it made me happy to see her fighting even when she knew the Dagourus cause. Her selflessness made her a hero, and I like that. I will try to be like Sahar and be courageous even when it’s hard. Sahar was a real hero. I’m so sorry that she passed, but may her memory always live on.
Love, Gabrielle G

Dear family of Boris Dunavetski,
In memory of your son Boris, I will try to bake something small before Shabbos most weeks because I heard your son loved cooking. Your son was a strong and brave young man, and I will always remember to stay strong and brave just like he did. Just like he loved Israel so much and risked his life to defend Israel, I will always remember that Israel is our homeland, and no matter how much people try to stop us, we will never let it get into our heads.
Love, Esther

Dear family of Shachaf Nesani,
Your child is so special to the Jewish People. “At 6:30 am on October 7th, she called her family to alert them of the attack and say, ‘I love you. She could have stayed on the line with her loved ones, but noticing that others did not have their phones, she offered them hers to say their goodbyes.” This part is meaningful to me; it sounds so hard for any human to do that because you might never ever talk to them again. However, Shachaf didn’t only care about herself; she cared for other people and saw the good in everyone. I’m gonna try to act like her, and even when someone may be annoying to me, to see the good in them and what they may be going through.
From, Olivia

Dear Rachel, Yehuda, Shira, Talia, Hadass, Elishiv, Hillel, Reut, and Neve,
30 years ago, I sat in the classrooms of your father and Saba, Rav Zvi, and your aunt/doda raba Judy. Today, I am a rabbanit in Atlanta, Georgia (USA), and work for Prizmah: Center for Jewish Day Schools supporting the incredibly dedicated people who work in Jewish day schools and yeshivas around North America. My ability to do this work is, in no small part, due to the investment that your family made in me decades ago. Rav Zvi was the first person I had ever heard say that Shabbat dinner would begin “70 minutes after hadlakat neirot”, something I now say to my guests each week. He taught me halakha through the way he walked in the world, in addition to the texts he unlocked for me. Judy was one of the first frum modern women I met who was teaching Torah in a serious way, inspiring me to do the same. I share these memories as a tiny glimpse into the tremendous impact that your family has made in my life. While I didn’t have the zechut to meet your Abba, I am so grateful for the tremendous impact he had on his students, his chayalim, the communities of Tzohar & Himmelfarb, Am Yisrael, Medinat Yisrael and the world. I pray that I have the zechut to walk in his footsteps, “l’taken olam b’malchut Shaddai” and leave the world filled with more love, faith, and light. May any pain that you experience in this loss be/become the pain of sweetness and connection.
May his memory be a blessing and your memories of him wrap you in comfort,
Debra Shaffer Seeman

To the Family of Maj. (res.) Nael Fwarsy,
With profound sorrow and deep respect, I extend my heartfelt condolences on the loss of your beloved husband, father, son, and brother, Maj. (res.) Nael Fwarsy. Words feel inadequate in the face of such a tremendous sacrifice, but I hope this letter brings even a small measure of comfort in knowing that his courage and character have touched the hearts of many beyond your immediate circle.
Nael’s story is one of extraordinary dedication, resilience, and love—for his country, his community, and above all, his family. To continue to serve while still recovering from an earlier injury, and with the knowledge that his wife was expecting their child, speaks to a level of selflessness and honor that is truly rare. His decision to report for duty, not out of obligation, but from a deep sense of responsibility and love for the land he called home, is a legacy that will inspire generations to come.
The loss of such a warm, sociable, and deeply principled man is not yours alone to bear. The entire nation to which he gave so much, grieves with you. His bravery during the most challenging times, and the ultimate price he paid, will never be forgotten.
Nael answered the call of his conscience and stood as a shield for others, without hesitation. That kind of courage defines true heroism.
May his memory be a guiding light for his children, and may the knowledge of his noble deeds bring you some solace. We owe him a debt that can never be repaid, but we will always honor his name.
With deepest sympathy and eternal gratitude,
Morris Dweck
