It is incomprehensible to imagine what you must be going through. The only thought, in addition to prayers for healing, would be there are people far away who mourn with you and who are blessed to have people like Daniel and you sacrifice so much for Israel’s freedom and safety.

Dear family of Tomer,

My name is Tamara Cartoon and I live in Perth, Western Australia. I was 3 months pregnant with my third baby when October 7 happened. Like many Jews in the diaspora, my husband and I would sit together in silence after we put our 2 kids to bed, reading the awful news and hoping for better news.. Your son’s story was one we read together one evening, and his courage and bravery stayed with us. When our son was born in May 2024, we gave him the Hebrew name Tomer, in honour of your brave son.

I am wishing you such strength
I passed davidka in Jerusalem today 9th May and saw his name on the side of a construction site and looked him up. I draw much inspiration from Shay and hope to emulate his beautiful middot. I am so so sorry for this unimaginable pain

We are with you

Hi, I learned about your beautiful daughter when I went to a Yom Hazikaron event sponsored by the Israeli Consulate and Temple Emmanuel in Manhattan. At the end of the service, they had a basket of cards with pictures of the fallen soldiers and I picked Lior. I will continue to remember her every year and light a candle for her. I read her bio and appreciate who she was in life and am sorry for this senseless loss. I was in Israel in June volunteering and hope to come to help out again. I hope your family can get strength from her memory and somehow heal. Best, Felice Carson

Dear family of Sgt. Roni Eshel,
I write you from the US with a heavy heart. The world has not been the same for me since October 7, and now I read about Roni with such sadness. Her intuition was special, and she used it and her skills to defend Eretz Israel. She died defending her country and ultimately all Jews and, for that, her life will always have had meaning. Her spirit will always be with you, and now I will light a candle and remember her too. I wish I could have known her.
My closest family lives in Israel, and they all served in the IDF – two generations. They are the family of my father’s brother who jumped off one of the ships that got turned away by the British probably in 1938, and he made it to land. He helped build the country (digging out swamps) and then became the Shammas at Hechal Shlomo in Jerusalem.. His brother, my father, escaped Vienna by train in 1939, after a week of being held by the Nazis. He was 19, the age of Roni. He had a visa to a yeshiva in London run by a famous rabbi – they helped endangered Jewish children in Europe get onto the Kindertransport. Then my father was arrested by the British in London (as an enemy “alien” in their “Fifth Column” policy) and deported to an internment camp in Canada where he did hard labor as a lumberjack for 2-1/2 years till released. His first work then was with Zionist organizations and the beginnings of Jewish youth movements, while cutting dress patterns in a factory to make a living. When he married my mother in 1949, she was living in US after escaping Vienna with her parents as a 12 year old, 10 years earlier. So he moved to US and for 30 years was the administrator of what was a new shul when he started. He never got over not being able to save his parents. And my mother’s father never got over trying to save his brother.
Your Roni, serving in the IDF with such honor, knew it was to keep you safe. It is as if she saved the whole country. Am Yisroel Chi. Roni’s memory is a blessing.
