Israel is currently navigating one of the most complex and consequential periods in its recent history, facing military, diplomatic, and strategic challenges on multiple fronts simultaneously. In a recent FIDF Live Briefing, Lt. Col. (Res.) Jonathan Conricus, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and former Israel Defense Forces international spokesperson, provided a detailed analysis of the critical decisions and events unfolding in Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran that will shape the future of the Middle East.
The Gaza Dilemma: A Window for Diplomacy Backed by Military Force
The immediate focus remains on Gaza, where the Israel Defense Forces has summoned approximately 60,000-65,000 reservists and deployed its most combat-ready troops around Gaza City. According to Lt. Col. Conricus, while the Israel Defense Force’s is fully prepared to enter Hamas’s last stronghold, it is deliberately keeping a “very big window open for diplomacy”. The objective is clear: compel Hamas, through pressure from its backers in Egypt and Qatar, to release the remaining 48 Israeli hostages and surrender its control of Gaza.
My assessment is that if Hamas does that… Israel won’t continue the military operations because it will achieve most of what it needs to achieve in order to safeguard the future for Israel,” Conricus stated.
Should diplomacy fail, the Israel Defense Forces has the capacity and willingness to finish the job, though it would be an “ugly” and “bloody” fight that Israel wishes to avoid. This military readiness serves as the essential leverage for a peaceful resolution that brings the hostages home.
Countering the Narrative on Humanitarian Efforts
Contrary to widespread claims, Israel is undertaking a “sincere, serious and multifaceted humanitarian effort” to move civilians out of harm’s way and provide them with necessary supplies. This effort is often ignored by international media. Meanwhile, Hamas actively works to keep civilians in danger, sending messages that threaten those who evacuate with consequences equal to treason.
A Historic Opportunity on the Northern Front
While the world’s attention is on Gaza, a potentially more significant strategic shift is occurring in Lebanon. Thanks to successful Israeli military operations that have weakened Hezbollah, a historic, US-backed diplomatic effort is underway to empower the Lebanese government to disarm the terror group. Lt. Col. Conricus described this as a pivotal moment, stating emphatically, “A disarmed Hezbollah in Lebanon is very, very meaningful, more meaningful than a disarmed Hamas”. Achieving this would be a monumental victory for Lebanese sovereignty, regional stability, and Israeli security.
The Iran Deadline: A Moment of Strategic Truth
Beyond the immediate fronts, a critical deadline is approaching for the Islamic Republic of Iran. European powers have set a timeline for the “snapback” of international sanctions if Iran does not cease its violations of the JCPOA and its continued enrichment of nuclear material. Lt. Col. Conricus issued a powerful call to action for supporters of Israel, urging them to engage with legislators. “This is the time to be strong, to be steadfast, and to focus on a very big strategic piece… to prevent the Islamic Republic from going nuclear,” he urged. This is a crucial moment to apply maximum pressure and ensure Iran cannot develop nuclear weapons.
The Toughest Side Will Prevail
The coming weeks are fraught with challenges, from immense diplomatic pressure at the UN to the immense personal toll the war has taken on Israel Defense Forces soldiers. Since October 7, over 20,000 Israelis, the vast majority of them young male soldiers, have been treated in hospitals, with many facing the deep mental scars of combat. As Lt. Col. Conricus concluded, “It’s raining on both sides, on Hamas and Israel. And the tougher side with the better mental stamina with the better support will win”.
The courage of these young men and women is unquestionable. As they stand strong to protect Israel, it is our duty to stand with them, providing the care and support they need to maintain that critical mental stamina. Please consider supporting FIDF’s critical well-being and mental health initiatives to ensure Israel’s heroes have the strength to prevail.
