Unprecedented Victories: Colonel Richard Kemp on Israel’s Defensive Masterclass
In a world grappling with continuous conflict and shattered ceasefires, clarity and conviction are more vital than ever. We recently had the profound honor of hosting British Colonel Richard Kemp, a distinguished war hero with decades of close collaboration with the IDF, who joined us directly from Israel to shed light on the recent, astonishing developments in the Middle East. His insights, drawn from firsthand experience in intense combat zones across Gaza, Lebanon, and alongside Israeli soldiers, offer an unparalleled understanding of the current geopolitical landscape.
The Staggering Success of Israeli Operations in Iran
Colonel Kemp unequivocally stated that the recent operations conducted by the IDF and Mossad in Iran have been “absolutely staggering,” surpassing even the “phenomenal events” of the past 20 months, including the elimination of key Hezbollah and Hamas leaders. These breathtaking operations, unfolding over the past 11 to 12 days, are the culmination of years of meticulous preparation, rehearsal, coordinated strikes by the Israeli Air Force, and exceptional interoperability between different IDF components.
The cornerstone of this success, according to Colonel Kemp, is an extraordinary level of intelligence. He believes no other intelligence agency could have achieved such deep penetration against Iran. The initial strikes were devastating, neutralizing a significant number of top-level IRGC and military commanders, as well as nuclear scientists. This decisive blow effectively crippled Iran’s armed forces, sending them into a spiral of disarray and leaving their leadership “isolated, bewildered, probably unable to really think logically or coherently.”
Decimating Iran’s Capabilities
The primary objective of these operations was to dismantle Iran’s nuclear capability, an aim Colonel Kemp estimates has been “largely successful.” Israel has consistently targeted Iranian nuclear facilities, with the United States delivering a “coup de grace” through B-2 bomber and submarine-launched cruise missile attacks on key sites, including Fordo. While rumors of uranium being moved prior to strikes exist, their veracity is questionable, potentially serving Iran’s propaganda efforts.
Regarding Iran’s ballistic missile capabilities, another major Israeli target, immense damage has been inflicted. Approximately “60% plus of ballistic missile launchers” have been neutralized, rendering the remaining missiles largely useless. Despite Iran’s relentless missile attacks on Israel over the past nearly two weeks, the strategic effect has been “absolutely minimal.” A phenomenal 90% of ballistic missiles have been intercepted by Israeli pilots, anti-missile systems, and crucially, by the US THAAD anti-missile system manned by US soldiers in Israel. Furthermore, nearly all of the roughly 1,000 drones launched by Iran have been successfully intercepted. This demonstrates Iran’s weakness, leaving them with “no cards left to play.”
Shifting Regional Dynamics and Iran’s Diminished Proxies
The conflict has profoundly strengthened Israel while severely weakening Iran. A prime example is Hezbollah in Lebanon, an Iranian proxy supplied with tens of thousands of missiles aimed at Israel. Despite Iran’s pleas, “not a single missile has been fired out of Lebanon by Hezbollah” during this conflict. This is a direct consequence of Israel’s dismantling of Hezbollah’s military capabilities last year, leaving them “shaking in its boots” and fearful of being “finally finished off by Israel.” Even the Lebanese government and army have, for the first time, acted against Hezbollah.
Iran’s loss of Syria, a primary axis for supplying weapons to Hezbollah, further signifies a “regional game changer.” Other Iranian proxies, such as the Houthis and Iraqi groups, have made “feeble attempts” to attack Israel with minimal to no success, and Hamas is on the verge of “complete destruction” in Gaza. Colonel Kemp estimates that Iran’s half-a-trillion-dollar proxy network is “pretty much finished.”
Prospects for Regime Change in Iran
While neither the US nor Israel explicitly stated regime change as a goal, the Israeli Prime Minister has called on Iranian citizens to overthrow the regime. Colonel Kemp believes this could be a “very consequential byproduct” of the recent actions. The Iranian regime is “extremely unpopular,” murdering, raping, torturing, and impoverishing its citizens, who have “had enough of it.” The severe damage inflicted on the IRGC and Bassij, key instruments of control, may now provide the Iranian people an opportunity to rise up. This ceasefire period could be “the time for the regime to be overthrown,” which would be highly beneficial, potentially preventing a resurgence of their nuclear program.
The Situation in Gaza: A Complex Battlefield and Humanitarian Efforts
Colonel Kemp has been on the ground in Gaza multiple times since the conflict began, observing the IDF’s “incredibly dangerous but very effective work” against Hamas. He described Gaza as “the most complex battlefield any army has ever had to fight on in the history of warfare.” The IDF continues its operations to destroy Hamas and rescue hostages, a task made more challenging by the need to keep them safe.
He also shared a fascinating experience with the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), an American initiative securely delivering aid to Gaza’s population. This is crucial because much of the aid previously delivered has been “hijacked by Hamas,” used to control civilians and fund terrorist activities. During his visit, he spoke with around 50 Gazans collecting aid, who expressed immense gratitude, associating the aid with the United States and often proclaiming “I love Trump” and “I hate Hamas kill Hamas.” He noted no signs of starvation among the people he saw, and most wished to leave Gaza permanently. Interestingly, both Hamas (who have killed GHF workers and threatened recipients) and the UN, along with other established aid organizations, have opposed the GHF’s efforts.
International Perceptions and the Future of Israel
Colonel Kemp believes that despite Israel’s monumental achievements in safeguarding global security, most world leaders will unfortunately not give Israel the credit it deserves. This stems from a “very, very long anti-Israel political warfare campaign.” He also highlighted the timidity of many Western European leaders who, despite recognizing the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran, lack the courage to fully support Israel, often driven by domestic political considerations and electorates influenced by anti-Israel sentiment.
Despite these challenges, Colonel Kemp expressed strong optimism for Israel’s future. He believes Israel will emerge “far more strongly than it went into it,” strengthened by the unity born from sacrifice, a clearer understanding of its allies and enemies, and increased self-reliance in weaponry. He also highlighted the awakened Jewish diaspora and the unprecedented behind-the-scenes support from almost every Arab country in the region, all of whom desire Hamas and Iran to be “smashed.” This dynamic, he suggests, will lead to an extension of the Abraham Accords.
The Challenge of Radicalization in the West
Addressing the alarming trend of radicalization in Western countries, particularly among youth, Colonel Kemp emphasized the need for a significant change in educational systems that have contributed to “brainwashing the young people.” He noted how educational staff have instilled anti-Israel and even anti-national sentiment. However, he offered a glimmer of hope from Ireland, a notoriously anti-Israel country. In the recent Eurovision Song Contest, the overwhelming majority of public votes (primarily from under-25s) went to Israel, a stark contrast to official government and elite opinions. This suggests a potential disconnect between the radicalized narrative and the true sentiments of some younger generations.
