Welcome

We wish to express our sincere appreciation for the contributions made to our 2023 Women of Valor Luncheon. This Luncheon would not be possible without the support of the many sponsors whose names appear on this page. We are so grateful for their kindness and generosity.

Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) provides support and comfort to the young men and women who, while yearning and praying for peace, must nonetheless, shoulder the difficult burden of protecting the State of Israel. In order for the soldiers to succeed in their sacred mission, they must be assured that we share their commitment.

By supporting FIDF, you demonstrate an understanding and compassion of the sacrifice made by the young men and women who defend Israel. The continuous support from all of us will positively affect the welfare of the soldiers for decades to come. FIDF will continue to provide the highest level of support for IDF soldiers.

Our 2023 Women of Valor Luncheon continues to support the IMPACT! Scholarship Program. This is a program for socioeconomically disadvantaged combat soldiers who have completed their military service and cannot afford higher education. We can play a pivotal role in providing in improving the lives of, not only the students who benefit from this scholarship, but also Israeli society as a whole.

What the soldiers give us can never be equaled by what we give them – but we must always strive to be worthy of their heroism.

Honoree Susie Pappas

Susie Pappas calls Detroit her home and after 50 plus years, it is indeed! She grew up in Highland Park, IL and went to the University of Michigan, where she met and married Norm Pappas.

In 1977, Susie and Norm went to Israel for the first time where they both experienced a “light bulb moment” and came home committed to making the world a better place for Jewish people. Susie dedicated the majority of her charitable hours to the Jewish Federation of Metro-Detroit, specifically to the Women’s Department, now known as Women’s Philanthropy. She served in many roles and ultimately became Women’s Campaign Chair and President of the Women’s Department. Along the way she served on the boards of the Jewish Community Center, Hebrew Free Loan, and Jewish Family Service. She was also a founding trustee of the Jewish Women’s Foundation. Susie currently serves as the Chair of the Leonard N. Simons Archives. She has also chaired community lunches and dinners for FIDF, Weizmann Institute, Bar Ilan University and Friendship Circle.

In 1981, Susie and Norm had the privilege of being on the first co-ed mission and to visit and spend the night at an IDF army base. This was a pivotal moment in their involvement with FIDF. Susie’s love and admiration for the brave soldiers who put their lives on the line for Israel and Jews worldwide began at this time. In 1985, Norm was asked to facilitate the beginning of Detroit’s chapter of FIDF. Susie and Norm chaired the first FIDF Dinner in Detroit where they honored all of the Detroiters who served in the IDF during the War of Independence in 1948. This commitment has grown over the years and continues to this day. Susie and Norm have sponsored several IDF soldiers through the IMPACT! Scholarship Program. One of the highlights of Susie’s most recent trip to Israel was meeting with two of her soldiers and their families. Their gratitude for their scholarship intensified Susie’s commitment to this special program.

Susie has been married to Norm for over 50 years and really loves being the “Susie” to the Susie and Norm Pappas Partnership! They have 3 children, Leslie (and Nat Ugar), Dan, and Amy. Their seven grandchildren bring them immense joy and are a highlight of their lives.

Susie feels very honored to be chosen as this year’s Woman of Valor. She loves her communal activities and what they bring to her life. She truly believes, “The more you give to others, the more you get in return.”

In 2015, she produced Above and Beyond, about the World War II airmen who volunteered to fight for Israel in the 1948 War. Above and Beyond won the audience award at more than twenty film festivals.
