Caring for Families of Fallen Soldiers

Their Loss is a Constant Struggle
A Few Days of Joy Can Make the Difference.

When an Israeli soldier dies in defense of the country, the family members left behind struggle with their grief and try to make sense of their new reality. FIDF’s LEGACY Programs support thousands of bereaved individuals – providing them with opportunities to connect with peers who have also suffered this terrible loss and helping them celebrate holidays and life-cycle events.

LEGACY Bar/Bat Mitzvah

Bar/Bat Mitzvah Celebration

FIDF helps mark this important passage into adulthood by sponsoring a special Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebration. The one-day event begins with a reception at the Presidential Residence and continues with making Aliya to the Torah at the Kotel, touring the Knesset, and visiting the Bible Lands Museum. It ends with a Mitzvah Ceremony, where all children enjoy a musical performance and receive a Mitzvah gift from FIDF.

  • Cost: A $1,200 contribution underwrites a family’s participation in this one-day celebratory event.

Bar/Bat Mitzvah Summer Camp in the U.S.

LEGACY Bar/Bat Mitzvah children also get to celebrate that special year by traveling to the United States for an unforgettable 10-day trip. Every year, FIDF brings around 120 Mitzvah-age children to enjoy summer camp activities, meet their American peers, tour famous sites, and form lifelong friendships.

  • Cost: $3,600 covers the cost of a child’s flights, camp fees, accommodations, and activities.

LEGACY Soldiers

Saluting the LEGACY Soldiers

FIDF continues to stand by their side as the LEGACY children grow up and reach the age of 18. In Israel, this age signifies a new phase of life accompanied by a new set of responsibilities. FIDF honors these LEGACY teenagers when they enlist in the IDF or join the civil service by sponsoring a celebratory day of sport activities, meetings with high-ranking military officials, music performances, and special gifts.

  • Cost: A $645 donation covers the cost of the event for a LEGACY Soldier.

R&R Vacations

Families who have lost a loved one struggle to rebuild their families and bring back a sense of normalcy. Over 3,000 widows and their children from across Israel stay together at Olga to enjoy a range of sports, social, and entertainment activities.

  • Cost: A $200 donation sponsors an entire vacation for a family member.

FIDF also sponsors retreats for 700 widows at resorts along the Dead Sea and in the City of Eilat, where they spend time with their peers and enjoy a range of leisure activities specially geared to their needs and interests.

  • Cost: A $200 donation sponsors a week’s vacation for a widow.

Rosh Hashanah Gifts

Every family has its own festive tradition when it comes to celebrating the Jewish holidays. The opening of a New Jewish Year, Rosh Hashanah, is a time of renewal and new beginnings. For the LEGACY families, it is a bittersweet occasion, marked with feelings of sadness and hope. FIDF extends its support and wishes for a better year with a Rosh Hashanah gift to the widows of fallen IDF soldiers. Approximately 4,000 widows receive a holiday gift every Rosh Hashanah.

  • Cost: For as little as $18, a Rosh Hashanah gift will be delivered to a widow.

Testimonials

"In 2002, our brother, Or-Moshe, fell in action. He served in the Armored Corps and was very proud to be an IDF soldier who protects his family and fellow Israelis. His death devastated us. When we lost him, our lives changed forever. So the support we received from everyone around us was important. We both participated in the FIDF LEGACY Program for siblings and children of fallen soldiers, and went on a trip to the U.S. The program was absolutely amazing. We were surrounded with love and met with many FIDF supporters. On behalf of our family, we would like to thank you for everything you are doing for us."

- Corporal Shiran, Air Force Operations Coordinator in a combat squadron And her sister Chen, high-school student

"The LEGACY Program brings Bar/Bat Mitzvah aged children from the families of fallen soldiers to a summer camp in the United States, providing them with both an emotional escape from the hardships of their daily life and an opportunity to bond with American children."

- Marci Spitzer, FIDF Supporter of the LEGACY Program from California
